Maxtrac Suspension manufactures a large line of lifting and lowering spindles (also known as steering knuckles), so we often get the question from customers. “Why don’t you make lift spindles for my 4wd truck?” There is a simple explanation for why it is physically impossible to use just a spindle to lift the front of a 4wd truck. 

On a 4wd truck with IFS (independent front suspension) , the front axles attach to the differential at one end, and run through the wheel bearing on the spindle at the other end. Our lift spindles achieve their 3”, 3.5”, or 4” lift by relocating the trucks wheel bearing down this same 3”, 3.5” or 4” distance. After the wheel bearing is moved down, it now sits directly in front of the lower control arm. If these spindles were put onto a 4wd truck, the front axle would now be running directly through the middle of the lower control arm, which is physically impossible.

The reason why other companies are able to offer spindles in their 4” and 6” 4WD lift kits is because the spindle is not what is actually providing the lift. These kits come with numerous brackets which drop down the lower control arms and differential, while providing longer struts which allow the vehicle to achieve the intended lift. Moving down all front end components creates room for the front axles to fit properly but also comes with a hefty price. This is why our 2wd lift spindles are so much more affordable than a 4wd lift kit.

We have found that the easiest way to measure your trucks axle diameter is to simply measure the spread between the u-bolts as shown here-

Bigger wheels & tires are probably be the best add-on to enhance driving through above-mentioned conditions, but most of the time limitations are imposed by the suspension of the truck not being able to fit nor adapt to run the combo you’re looking for.

So, what is there to be done? Increase ground clearance and run the wheel fitment you’re looking for with a MaxTrac’s lift kit.

There isn’t much explaining to do, as the concept behind MaxTrac lift kits is to be kept as simple as possible, thus allowing a mounting procedure without a high complexity grade. To provide a specific example on what a lift kit is made of, let’s have a look at a 2WD Toyota Tacoma, built between 2005 and 2014. All Tacoma trucks built between these years feature the same suspension, all allowing for a MaxTrac lift kit to be installed. A typical MaxTrac lift kit ready to be installed on a Tacoma truck includes 4” lift spindles along with DOT approved brake lines (MaxTrac takes no chances when it’s about vehicle safety), 2.5” strut spacer, 4” rear lift blocks with U-shaped bolts, brake line and carrier bearing brackets and twin-tube MaxTrac patented rear shocks.

The combination of elements has been carefully designed, forged and assembled in order to replace a stock Tacoma truck suspension without the need of wielding, cutting or any other custom adjustments. All components featured in the lift kit fit bolt-on on the chassis. Different components may be found inside the lift kit provided for your truck compared to ones offered for Toyota Tacoma trucks. This depends on your truck’s make and model.

A lift kit looks and sounds good, but let’s have a better look on what it can actually do for your truck. First of all, the purpose of any lift kit is to get your car higher off the ground. An increased ground clearance will facilitate over passing road objects such as fallen rocks or logs without having to commence evasive maneuvers. Your oil pan and exhaust system will be kept high and safe.

Also, a lifted suspension allows for bigger wheels to be mounted. Depending on your truck’s model, MaxTrac lift kits can allow wheels up to 35” to be mounted instead of the stock figures. Say goodbye to traction issues caused by snow and mud.
